A System that Works

North Carolina’s early childhood system is truly just that—a system. Take for example, the Greene County Family Literacy program. It is a parent and child literacy program. Parents enroll in Adult Basic Education, GED or English as a Second Language classes. At the same time, their children ages 1-4 come to the same campus and participate in a 5-star, early childhood education program, allowing time during the day for parents to interact with their children. The program is the result of community collaboration and leveraging of resources. It is funded through Smart Start, Even Start, More at Four, the county school system and private donations. As the letter below demonstrates, it’s a program that allows parents to dream for a better life for their children.
