Governor Jim Hunt & American Idol Finalist Anoop Desai Release Joint Video Message

Getting out the vote is not all that former Governor Jim Hunt and 2009 American Idol finalist Anoop Desai have in common. The two came together to record a video message asking legislators to “Hold the Line” on investments in young children. The video is part of the “Hold the Line” for NC Children Virtual Advocacy Day on May 18 organized by Smart Start. The video can be viewed at www.youtube.com/ncsmartstart.

Smart Start is calling on North Carolinians to take to their Twitter accounts, Facebook pages, and blogs, and post messages asking legislators to “Hold the Line” and continue to invest in programs for young children. The message supports what 800 parents, business leaders, elected officials, health care providers, early childhood professionals and others from across the state had to say when they came together this year to speak to the importance of investing in our youngest citizens. All agreed that ensuring access to high quality early childhood care and education programs needed to be a top priority for the state. Other nonprofits that serve children and families are joining in as well, including Prevent Child Abuse NC and Action for Children.

Governor Jim Hunt served a record four terms as Governor of North Carolina (1977-1985, 1993-2001). He created the nation’s first statewide early childhood system, Smart Start. It is now a nationally recognized, award-winning initiative that other states look to as a model.

Anoop Desai was a finalist on the eighth season of American Idol. He recently released his first independent album, All is Fair. Desai was raised in Chapel Hill and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Governor Hunt and Desai recorded their message at the Learning Together Child Care Center in Raleigh. In it, they say, “Today’s children are our future leaders. When we invest in them, we invest in our state.” They call on North Carolinians to use their voices to speak on behalf of our youngest citizens and invest in early childhood education.

I was born and bred in North Carolina and I am voicing that I would like the NC legislators to “Hold the Line” on supporting the education of our children. Support the teachers, the education system and the libraries. This is our future and the largest investment that we can make.
